Ministry for Climate and Energy
The Ministry for Climate and Energy of the Republic of Latvia is a cornerstone of the nation’s transition toward sustainability, driving forward strategies to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. With a focus on renewable energy, emissions reduction, and community engagement, the ministry plays a critical role in aligning Latvia's policies with international environmental commitments.
Achieving climate neutrality
Latvia’s ambitious goal of climate neutrality by 2050 is anchored in the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) 2021–2030. This strategic document outlines pathways for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the share of renewable energy, and improving energy efficiency across key sectors such as transport, agriculture, and waste management. By targeting a 17% reduction in emissions by 2030 compared to 2005 levels, the ministry integrates climate goals into sectoral policies to ensure cohesive and impactful implementation.
Strengthening sustainable finance
A robust Sustainability Bond Framework supports Latvia’s climate goals, providing funding for initiatives that mitigate climate change, reduce pollution, conserve biodiversity, and promote sustainable forestry. This framework not only enhances the nation’s sustainable finance system but also ensures transparent allocation of resources to impactful projects.
Driving key initiatives
Through its involvement in the EU LIFE Programme, the ministry supports projects like "Waste as a Resource," aimed at improving waste management practices and implementing circular economy principles. The Environmental Policy Concept 2021–2027 further strengthens Latvia’s environmental governance by prioritizing climate mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable resource management, aligning with the EU Green Deal objectives. The National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change until 2030 complements these efforts by promoting resilience against climate impacts across various sectors.
Community engagement and accountability
The ministry actively collaborates with local municipalities, stakeholders, and EU bodies to raise awareness of sustainability initiatives and foster community involvement. Transparent reporting on the allocation and impact of sustainability bonds enhances public trust, while periodic assessments of national policies ensure alignment with EU objectives.
Together for a sustainable future
In collaboration with The Baltic Sustainability Forum organizers and partners, the Ministry for Climate and Energy of the Republic of Latvia is building a platform to drive innovation, share knowledge, and advance sustainability efforts. By leveraging its leadership in renewable energy, emissions reduction, and environmental policy, the ministry inspires progress and fosters collective action to achieve climate neutrality. This partnership underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in creating a sustainable and resilient future for Latvia and beyond.
